Howells LLP has been named as the only solicitors’ practice outside London to achieve the top rating for its work on police law.

The Band 1 rating was awarded to the firm in the new 2011 Chambers Guide to Solicitors, the annual publication in which the UK’s leading lawyers and law firms are identified through interviews with thousands of lawyers and their clients.

Howells also received the top Band 1 rating for its crime and immigration work, with head of crime Danny Simpson and Peter Mahy, who heads up the firm’s police law department, also being named individually in Band 1 for their work. Another partner, Chris Davey was also rated as an individual for her work in criminal defence.

The firm was also recognised for its work in administrative and public law and its work on civil liberties.

Managing Partner John McSweeney, said everyone was delighted with this year’s results.

“The Chambers Guide is a very meaningful seal of approval for the quality and professionalism of our work. It is widely recognised for its independence and objectivity, giving clients and other law firms the confidence that when they come to us, they’ll get the best possible legal advice from specialists in the field.

“Peter, Danny and Chris are deservedly acknowledged for their work as individuals, and the excellent ratings for a number of our departments are a real tribute to all the staff working in those areas.”
