You may never have given much thought to your payslip, but you would be surprised what they should contain and when it should be provided.
Employers are already legally obliged to provide payslips to employees, on or before their pay date, on paper, or an easily accessible electronic format that can be printed. Employees should not have to ask for them.
From 6th of April, forming part of the Governments ‘Good Work Plan’, employers are legally obliged to provide payslips to workers as well as employees – such as those on zero hours, casual or agency contracts.
Employers must now also include more information for those whose pay depends on the amount of hours worked, including paid overtime. Payslips must show the total number of hours worked in respect of the variable amount of pay – so if you are salaried but paid extra for overtime, your payslip should show the number of hours overtime you have done in the relevant period. If you are paid by the hour the number of hours you have worked should be shown.
This should help you check you are being paid the rate you are expecting for all the hours you have worked, which now should be at least the National Minimum Wage, which has also gone up from the start of April to £8.21 per hour for workers aged 25 and over.
We always advise those being paid by the hour to keep a careful record of the hours they work on a calendar or in a diary in case of future disputes.
