The HR & Employment department at Howells Solicitors this week’s welcomes a new addition to their already well established team. Danny Smith, an expert in commercial and employment law, joins the law firm at an exciting period of expansion and development.
Danny joins Howells after working at a Sheffield based commercial law firm where he provided employment law advice and assistance to small and medium businesses throughout the South Yorkshire region. Danny has also previously worked at a large commercial law firm where he specialised in litigation.
“I specialise as a litigation lawyer, but I have mainly worked in the employment law sector.” Explains Danny “I have always been passionate about employment law as it’s an area of law that affects the majority of people’s lives as many people spend the majority of their time at work.
“Employment law is always changing, mostly due to the political climate and businesses need to ensure they are legally complying to ensure their business is kept safe and their business stays thriving.
“Unlike some solicitors, I provide straight forward, clear and concise legal advice without jargon. I have a no-nonsense approach to my practice and tell clients how it is offering pragmatic solutions. I am commercially minded and get to know my client’s businesses.”
Danny will be based at the firms Sheffield office, covering clients in the Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley area. Asking why Danny has focused his career in South Yorkshire he said “My family live in Sheffield and being a Sheffield United season ticket holder means that there is no other place I would rather be!”
Danny joins renowned employment law specialist Clare Fowler at Howells Solicitors, who heads up the firm HR & Employment team.
“It’s an exciting time for Danny to be joining the firm as we celebrate our 40th year in business.” Clare says “We are also experiencing a period of high growth across the firm, and I welcome Danny’s expertise and knowledge into my flourishing team as it will allow the firm to expand our offering to local businesses.”
Danny explains that he has always been interested joining the Howells highly regarded employment law team.
“Howells is a top professional outfit that provides down-to-earth and pragmatic legal advice appealing to both individuals and businesses. It has an ambitious vision and growth plan that I wish to be part of and shape. It is an exciting time for the firm!
“The firm puts its clients and employees at the heart of its business. The dominance of family friendly policies, such as flexible working arrangements and generous holiday entitlement for its staff, are very appealing to a new dad like myself. I also know that the firm actively encourages development and training for all its staff with the ability to progress within the firm. This is important to me along with the top quality work that it offers.”
Discussing the topic of employment law, Danny explains “Working in employment law is intellectually stimulating and varied. One minute I can be drafting pleadings, the next I can be receiving a call from a client asking what to do with a certain disruptive member of staff to representing a client before a multi-day tribunal. It is fast paced and exciting”
Danny also joins the firm at a time of political unrest for businesses in the region and has the following comments.
“Despite assurances from the government, Brexit is likely to have a huge impact upon the field of employment law. Many existing employment protections originate from the EU and therefore upon our departure it will be interesting whether rights will be eroded or become more business friendly. The scale of change will depend on the rosette colour of the government of the day.
I can guarantee myself and the team will always be up to speed with any proposed changes and will be ready to advise both employees and businesses of their rights and duties.”
