Liam Flanagan, 24, began his journey with Howells in January 2014 whilst he was studying at Sheffield College. “When I was researching law firms to approach for work experience, the two big names in Sheffield were Howells and Irwen Mitchell. The good reputation of Howells from friends and family, and their reputation of investing in their staff were the main reasons I chose them to gain experience, that and my law tutors at College highly recommended Howells due to their ethos of being client focused and helping people. This was the main reason I wanted to get into law in the first place.
“I started out by work shadowing in the debt team, which Howells used to have, and I enjoyed it so much I decided not to proceed to University and carry out my CILEX course whilst gaining on the job experience at Howells.
“I carried out an apprenticeship with Howells, and within two years I passed my level two in business and administration. Then I started in the family team working as the first line of communication for client enquiries. There I started my CILEX course which will enable me to become a legal secretary without having to enroll in higher education, and gain on the job training.
“Howells have been nothing but supportive from day one. Not only investing in my career financially by paying for my training and funding my CILEX course, but the team have mentored me through my whole career so far and are always there to give guidance and help. The partners have also always been so supportive and nurturing and their door is always open.”
Liam was awarded the ‘Outstanding BTEC Apprentice of the Year by the National BTEC Awards 2015 for his outstanding work and progression under the apprentice scheme. He is now one year from completing his CILEX course.
“My advice for anyone wanting to get into law is to focus on practicing law. You can learn the theory, but as soon as you hit the ground running and start gaining practical knowledge, that’s when you start to really learn.
“At Howells you’re not just a number and you feel like you’re part of the family due to the fact there is a personal touch to the business. The work is challenging, but you get what you put into the firm – if you work hard, you will get rewarded.”
