As lockdown lifts, what does this mean for housing tenants and evictions?

As lockdown is lifting, the pause on evictions and essential repairs and works will come to an end.

Repairs

As the lockdown is coming to an end, councils and other landlords have no excuse for not carrying out essential repairs to tenants’ homes. If they don’t do repairs when asked, legal aid may be available to help you to take legal action to ensure the repairs are completed. See here for more information.

Evictions

The ban on evictions imposed by the pandemic comes to an end on 31 May 2021. Tenants in rent arrears who have been to court previously may soon receive notice saying that bailiffs will be coming to evict them. Anyone in this situation should take advice quickly as you may be able to apply to the court to stop the eviction. For more information on evictions and the action you can take, see here.
