Howells Solicitors

28 Jul, 2015

Over the last 18 months, Howells Solicitors have supported TRC as an Employee Advisor to the college. Working with the Law Department and providing support and sponsorship, Howells have enabled students to gain an insight into the legal profession.

As part of the employee advisor scheme Howells has attended open evenings to give advice to prospective students and parents, provided sponsorship to the college and given law students a taste of the legal profession by offering a week’s work experience to 4 students.

The employee advisor scheme is just one of the initiatives undertaken by TRC that has seen an increase in students opting to go on to study a law degree. Recent destination numbers show more TRC students opted for a law degree than any other subject, with 29 students having studied A Level Law or BTEC Law.

Andrew Penney, Course Leader at TRC commented “This year has seen a very successful partnership between Howells and the TRC Law department.  Students have found the work experience to be very rewarding and an inspiring first taste of the legal profession.

“The sponsorship from Howells has funded a range of initiatives to support and celebrate student’s successes. Vouchers were awarded to celebrate the highest value-added achievements by students, additional textbooks were purchased to support workshops and a new purchase of a Hudl2 has allowed students to deliver presentations and add content to the college’s website and display boards.

“The open evenings and careers fairs have been particularly successful this year with the presence of Howells at each event. We have received very good feedback from parents and students about the quality of employer liaison in the department. Our forecast numbers for next years intake are very strong which is highly encouraging.”

Mary Rose Macadam, Partner and Solicitor at Howells in Rotherham, commented: “We are delighted to continue working with Thomas Rotherham College as an employee advisor.

“By engaging with students through work experience we hope to inspire them to aim high in their ambitions and encourage them to fulfil their potential. Work experience is a great addition to have on university application forms and we are happy to have the opportunity to help local students gain the advantage. We look forward to continuing this relationship with the college.”
