Probate fees are set to rise

Probate fees are set to rise with the introduction of a flat fee as opposed to fees based on the estate’s value.

The Ministry of Justice is looking to make grant of probate fees more expensive, with a rise from between £155 and £215, to a flat fee of £273 for all applicants, regardless of the size of the estate.

The government claim this proposal is due to that fact that the current system operates at a loss and places an unfair burden on the taxpayer.

The government said a deficit of £85m currently exists in family jurisdiction services and that the proposals will raise between £23m and £25m each year from 2022.
