Rotherham Inquiry reports wide spread child abuse

Following reports on Rotherham children being subjected to Child Sexual Exploitation, Howells are urging victims to get the help and advice they need and to bring those responsible to justice.

An independent Inquiry carried out by Professor Alexis Jay into Child Sexual Exploitation in Rotherham has found that more than 1,400 children as young as 11 in Rotherham have been sexually exploited between 1997 and 2013.

The inquiry commissioned by Rotherham Borough Council highlights serious child protection failings, reporting that “in just over a third of cases, children affected by sexual exploitation were previously known to services because of child protection and neglect.”

The review also revealed that there had been previous inquiries and that “stark evidence came in 2002, 2003 and 2006 with three reports known to the Police and the Council, which could not have been clearer in their description of the situation in Rotherham.”

Sue Colven, Deputy Managing Partner at Howells Solicitors commented “The recent report is very shocking, not only with reports of such wide spread sustained abuse but also the suggestion of the systematic failings of the authorities. Those responsible should be held accountable for failing to protect vulnerable children and immediate action is needed.”
