Students from 2 regional schools battled it out in the Sheffield Crown Court to win the final of the SHU Inter-School Mock Trial Competition 2013.
Howells Solicitors were delighted to have sponsored the event organised by Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Law Society, which is aimed at inspiring young people to pursue a career in law.
Opened to students who are interested in following a career in law, the competition gave the opportunity to gain an insight into the skills needed to be a Solicitor or Barrister and allowed the students to meet professionals working in local legal firms.
The finalists took part in an exciting mock trial, with the teams preparing their own cases and presenting their roles of prosecution and defence. The final was judged by the jury; a panel of Solicitors, Sheffield Hallam Law academics and other legal professionals.
Previous heats saw eight teams from various schools across the region take part in a debate, with the highest scoring teams going on to take part in a criminal mock trial. The Priory Academy LSST Lincoln and Notre Dame High School Sheffield were the two schools to make it to the final stage of the competition, with The Priory Academy being awarded the overall winners.
Tom Bernard, Howells Solicitor and part of the mock jury said “It’s great to see young people getting involved and taking an interest in law, I was very impressed with the all the students and the amount of work they had done. The competition is a great opportunity for us to encourage young people to pursue their ambitions and allows students to gain valuable experience.”
