Mary Rose studied languages at the University of Sussex before converting to law. She worked at Brighton Law Centre and was then Chair of the Management Committee while studying law. She then worked for Brighton Council until she joined Howells Solicitors in 1989 as an Articled Clerk (Trainee Solicitor) and joined the Criminal Department when she qualified in 1992. She became a Duty Solicitor 12 months after qualifying, and joined the Partnership in 2004.

Mary Rose leads the Crime teams at Rotherham and Barnsley and is often found representing clients accused of criminal offences throughout South Yorkshire’s Magistrates Courts. She is an expert in her field and has a particular knowledge of Youth Court work and cases involving mental health issues.

In order to provide an all-round service Mary Rose also represents clients in prison, at Parole Board Hearings and Independent Adjudications. She also appears before local authority Licensing Committees on behalf of taxi and private-hire drivers, and represents at appeals to the Magistrates’ Court.

Mary Rose is an active member of the Sheffield Esteli Society, the twinning organisation with Sheffield’s twin town of Esteli in Nicaragua, and was part of the delegation that visited there in 2014.

Notable Cases

R v Roble [1997] EWCA Crim 118 – one of the first landmark cases on the right to silence, following the change in the law under the CJPOA 1994.

R v B – father accused of murder of baby son by shaking, successfully argued for manslaughter conviction and suspended sentence upon the particular circumstances of the case.

R v T – defended an 11 year old child accused of indecent assault, represented at youth court trial and secured acquittal, complainant admitting during expert cross examination that another person was responsible.

R v NM – burglary charge where psychological evidence was obtained to rebut what was otherwise a compelling case of joint enterprise, and client acquitted.

R v Davis – high profile case of sexual assaults and indecent images, sentence successfully challenged at Court of Appeal.

R v BP – Assault case involving defence of insanity and the rule in M’Naghten.
